Band Announcements

1st Year Band announcements:

  • 1st year band is off to a great start.  The students know three pitches and can play songs with half notes and wholes notes.  Everyone should be on at least page 7.  A  good amount of time them to be practicing at this point is 15 minutes a few times a week.  I know that not everyone is going to  be able to practice at home, but the more frequently they are able to, the faster everyone will progress.

2nd Year Band announcements:

  • 2nd year band is off to a great start.  We have reviewed what we did last year and we are working on Jingle Bells on Page 12 and "We Three Kings" (sheet music), we will probably be getting a third song soon.  A good amount of time for them to be practicing this year is 15-20 minutes at a time a few times a week.  I understand that this is not always possible but if they can practice a little here and there it will help us progress faster as a group.

Everyone Announcements:

  • I have started passing out "band bucks." Students can use these to buy prizes at auctions that we will have periodically.  They can earn bucks by writing their practice minutes on the chart in the front of their book, passing off songs in the book, or answering questions correctly. 

  • If you need to order supplies, just let me know what you need and send the money to school with your child.  If you write a check for supplies, it should be made to Graves County Band Boosters.  Here are the prices for common items: 
      • Book=$12
      • Stand = $15
      • Cleaning Kit =$16
      • Valve/slide oil =$1
      • Reed=$3 
  • Our High School Band is hosting a marching band contest starting at 5:45 PM Saturday evening at the high school football stadium.  Several excellent bands from our area will be performing their marching shows and competing.  This is a great family-friendly show and tickets are only $5.  All proceeds go to support the Graves County High School Band.  I hope you can join us for us contest Saturday evening.

Information for New Band Parents

This is the information for NEW band members for the 2017-18 school year.  2nd year students will receive a blue folder with information.  1st year parents please read below.

Time to sign up for Band!!!

Greetings 5th and 6th grade parents and students,
This year your child has the opportunity to sign up for band!
If your child would like to be a part of the band, fill-out the form attached to this letter. I will come to your child’s school and test your child out on flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. Your child and I will select the one that suits them best and then you can come to the instrument rental night to get their instrument.

This year we will be starting with these basic four instruments. If your child sticks with band, they will have the opportunity to switch to oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, baritone, tuba, or percussion (drums.) I will start selecting the students who will be allowed to play drums after Christmas, and all of the other instruments can be switched to in middle school.
To sign up your child for the Graves County Elementary Band Program please fill out the attached sign up-form and have your child return it to the secretary at your child’s school by Friday, August 11th.

During the week of August 14th , I will meet with each child during the school day and test them out on the different instruments to see which one best fits them. I will send home information about which instrument they have selected.
To get their instrument, the parent and child should come to the instrument rental meeting on Tuesday, August 22nd at 6:30 PM. The meeting is in the GCMS Band room. (Enter through the bus loop side of the school.)
Rent-to-Own: A representative from Amro music will be present to discuss the rent-to-own process and pass out the instruments. Parents should be prepared to pay $60 at the meeting. Rental amount is $40 per month. If you rent from Amro you get:
· Instrument
· Book
· Music stand
· Cleaning supplies
· Maintenance/insurance
You don’t have to use Amro but, if you choose to get an instrument from somewhere else, please check with me first so I can make sure the instrument is of good quality. I have had parents taken advantage of by e-bay sellers and discount stores. I want you to get your money’s worth.
Rent-from-school: We have a few school instruments available for students who need them. These are assigned on a first-come basis, so it is possible that a student may not get their first choice of instrument if they are using a school instrument. School instruments don’t come with stands and cleaning kits. Also, parents will assume responsibility for damage done to the instrument.
Parents who need to rent from school must call or email me before the rental meeting to reserve your child’s school instrument. To reserve a school owned instrument call 270-293-9523 or email ellis.shelby@graves.kyschools.us by 8/18/17.
I strongly encourage for anyone who can to rent-to-own from Amro instead of renting from school.
Every band student needs to have at least one parent attend this meeting. If you can’t make it, please contact me to make other arrangements. If you have an instrument already that you plan on using, please bring it so that we can make sure it is in good working order. Concert Date Changed

The date of the winter band concert had to be changed due to a conflict at the high school.  The concert is now scheduled for Tuesday, December 6th at 7 PM in the Graves County PAC.  There will not be after school practice for first years this day.  I'm sorry for the inconvenience of this change but it was they only date we were able to get.

Please remember that students need all BLACK clothes for the concert.  If your are not able to get these, I need to know ASAP, so that I can make arrangements to get some for your child.

The songs the first year students are playing at the concert are #12,#15,#16, #17, #18, #19, #22, #23, #24, and maybe #27 if we have time to learn it.  Most of the students know all of these except for the last two.  If they do not have check marks in their books by these songs, please have them practice them over the longweekend.

Second years are playing Jingle Bells, Jolly Old St. Nick, and Bring your torch Jenette- Issabella. Please have them practice these at home over the long weekend as well.

Dear Students and Parents,

I am extremely excited that your student has decided to participate in band this year.  Being part of the band is a great chance for your student to learn to play an instrument as an individual and as part of a group. I hope that this will be a fun and rewarding experience for your student this year.

Here is a brief overview of what to expect.


In School Band –
·         Every student will have a 30 minute group lesson once a week during the school day.  (Please see the attached schedule.) 

·         In school band will begin the week of Tuesday, August 23rd  (please see attached schedule.)

·         On the day your student has in school band they must have their instrument, music/band book, and a pencil to be allowed to participate. 

·         Each student will be told their band time and will be responsible for remembering when to come. 

·         If they are not in good standing with their classroom teacher for missing work or poor behavior, they will not be allowed to come to band until the teacher is satisfied that the situation has been corrected.

After School Band –
·         After school band practice is optional, but all students are encouraged to attend as much as possible.

·         1st year band has after school practice on Tuesday afternoons in the GRAVES COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND ROOM from 3:30 – 4:20 PM. The first after school practice for 1st year students is Tuesday, September 6th.

·         2nd year band has after school practice on Wednesday afternoons in the GRAVES COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND ROOM from 3:30 – 4:20 PM. The first after school practice for 2nd year students is Wednesdan, August 31st.

·         If we have early release or don’t have school, then we don’t have after school practice.

·         Students can ride the bus from their elementary school to after school band practice, but someone will need to pick them up at 4:20 PM in the middle school bus loop.

·         Snacks will be provided for all students for free, but there are vending machines if students wish to use them.

·         Please, please, please pick up your student on time.  I know emergencies happen.  Please add my cell to your contacts so you can call if you have had an emergency. (270-293-9523.)  

·         Students who are left at the Middle School without a ride on multiple occasions will not be allowed to attend after school practice.

·         Please make sure that your student knows their own phone number before they attend after school practice. (In case of emergency.)



1.      Every student must bring their instrument, equipment, and music/book to practice.
2.      Each student will show respect for other band members and directors at all times.
3.      Appropriate playing techniques will be used at all times.
4.      Everyone will show respect for the facilities.
5.      Students will treat all instruments with respect.
6.      There will be no running or horseplay of any kind allowed in the band room.
7.      Students are expected to not interrupt practice to distract students/directors or to draw attention to them.
8.      Students are expected to put in the necessary effort outside of class so that they may fully meet their potential.
9.      Students who choose not to meet the expectations will not be allowed to return to after school practice until Their parents have a conference with Mrs. Shelby and a behavior contract is put in place.

Home Practice--
Since we only have band one/two times a week, students will need to practice at home to stay on track.  Students who practice and write down their practice information in a practice log will be rewarded with “band bucks.” Students can also earn “band bucks” by passing off approved songs for Mrs. Shelby.  Students can spend their bucks on prizes at our periodic afterschool auctions.

I encourage parents to have your band member set a regular practice time and location.  I know it can be difficult to listen to at first, but sending a child outside to practice and/or complaining about the noise can be very discouraging to the student.  Remember, the more they practice at home, the sooner they will start to sound good!


Performance Dress:

This year students will need to wear all BLACK at every concert.  This includes socks and shoes. 

The following are OK:
·         Slacks, button down shirts, sweaters, modest skirts and dresses, dress shoes

The following are NOT OK:
·         T-shirt,  jeans, sneakers, athletic clothing

If you are having trouble getting the required dress clothes please let me know so arrangements can be made, or contact your schools family resource director.  I will make sure that everyone has the clothes they need, but you need to let me know ASAP if you need help with that.                         


Chairs and Stands:
  1. Stands are to be stacked at the end of every afterschool practice.
  2. Stands are to never be used as tables unless otherwise instructed.
  3. Chairs and stands are property of the school and students will be held accountable if they are intentionally damaged.

School-Owned Instruments:
  1. Students are to only touch/play their instrument.
  2. Students that use school owned instruments are expected to treat the instrument with great care.
  3. The student will be held financially responsible all supplies needed for their instrument and for any damage to their instrument.
  4. Every student that uses a school owned instrument must pay a non-refundable $30 fee each semester the child is in band. ($60 for the year.)   This is a school board policy that I must enforce.  The fee helps keep our school instruments in good playing condition.  If you cannot afford the fee, contact your school’s family resource center.

Student-Owned Instruments:
  1. Students are to only touch/play their instrument.
  2. All instruments are expected to be in playing condition for class each day.
  3. All instruments MUST have the name tag provided to each student.

Instrument Repairs:
In many cases one of the directors can make a repair if it is minor.  However, there are many repairs that need to be handled by a professional instrument technician.  In these cases I will usually send those to Amro unless you tell me not to send it there.  Students will not get their instrument back until the repair bill is paid.

New instrument purchases:
I strongly recommend talking with me before buying a new instrument for your child.  We can help find an instrument that fits your child’s needs and your budget.  As with so many items out there today you get what you pay for.  Spending a little more when purchasing an instrument will many times save you a lot of money in instrument repairs latter on.

Recommended Supplies for each instrument:
It is recommended that each student purchase the following basic items to keep their instrument in good condition and help them be better musicians.

ALL STUDENTS:  I highly recommend a folding music stand to prevent the student from developing poor posture habits.  I also recommend a tuner and metronome for practice at home.  Please let me know you would like me to order you one of these items.  If you rent from Amro, These items along with a music stand will come with the instrument. 

Flute: cleaning rod/swab

Clarinet/Saxophone:  Must have at least 4 reeds in good condition, a reed case that holds four reeds, swab, mouthpiece cover, and cork grease

Trumpet: Valve oil, small container of Vaseline, and a cleaning kit (includes all brushes for cleaning)

Trombone:  Bottle of Slide-O-Mix or slide cream and a spray bottle, small container of Vaseline, and a bore snake for cleaning
